How Hyperbaric Therapy Works

Your body’s tissues need an adequate supply of oxygen to function. When tissue is injured, it requires even more oxygen to survive. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry. An increase in blood oxygen temporarily restores normal levels of blood gasses and tissue function to promote healing and fight infection. In normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. In a hyperbaric oxygen therapy chamber, the air pressure is increased to three times higher than normal air pressure. Oxygen is dissolved into all of the body’s fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. In this way, extra oxygen can reach all of the damaged tissues and the body can support it own healing process. Increased oxygen greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria. Research Findings

Studies have shown a single hyperbaric treatment to human cells that line our blood vessels turns on 8,101 genes in 24 hours following HBOT. With a second

treatment at 24 hours, even more genes are activated. The cells begin to roll up and form small blood vessels.  In the 1970’s Russian physicians successfully

used low pressures of hyperbaric oxygen therapy to treat chronic lung disease and reported this at the 7th International Congress on Hyperbaric Medicine.
